Nørrebor gathers on the field
Opening up a hidden urban space into a vibrant meeting place for sport, everyday life, and community.
The project responds to Nørrebro’s shortage of sports facilities while creating a safe and inclusive gathering place for residents. Initiated by Nørrebro United and the housing association AKB, the intervention combines upgraded training facilities with a publicly accessible landscape, strengthening both physical connections and social cohesion in the neighbourhood.
A Multifunctional Activity Landscape
The overall ambition is to better connect the area with its surroundings and strengthen the sense of community among residents and users. In addition to upgraded training facilities for Nørrebro United, the project introduces a diverse green and recreational landscape open to everyone — regardless of age, gender, or activity level.
Building on the area’s existing qualities, the project transforms a previously enclosed and overlooked space along the housing blocks into a lively, welcoming, and multifunctional activity area.
Opening Up the Site
A restrictive fence has been removed to improve integration with the surrounding neighbourhood. The former football pitch has been upgraded with a new artificial turf field, now serving both Nørrebro United and local residents.
Spaces for Activity and Recreation
The project features an activity trail designed to challenge balance and coordination, as well as new playground facilities. Spaces for relaxation are integrated throughout — both near the active zones and in quieter seating areas — creating opportunities for meeting, socializing, and everyday use.
Most of the existing trees have been preserved, while new trees have been planted to increase both age and species diversity. Flowering planting beds further enhance the sensory and recreational qualities of the landscape.
Alongside these green initiatives, the project also incorporates the potential for future stormwater management to address increasing rainfall.
Activity as a Driver for Safety
AKB København Lundtoftegade is home to around 1,500 residents representing approximately 40 nationalities, giving the project a strong social dimension. Safety has been improved through better lighting and increased visibility, while the introduction of new activities and everyday use contributes to a stronger sense of security in the area.
