Roskilde Vest
The framework of the new master plan will further develop the human scale of the outdoor spaces.
The project establishes a long-term development strategy that reimagines Roskilde Sydvest as a cohesive and open district defined by its green structure. Inspired by the logic of allotment gardens, the proposal introduces a human-scaled landscape that fosters social interaction, strengthens local identity, and creates new connections across the neighbourhood.
A New Green Framework for the District
The masterplan introduces a unified green identity as the foundation for future development. By using landscape as the primary structuring element, the project breaks down the large-scale housing areas into smaller, more legible environments that support everyday life and human interaction.
Drawing on the concept of “the gardens of the city,” the project transforms the district into a network of gardens and shared spaces. This approach creates an open and welcoming residential area for current residents, newcomers, and visitors, while strengthening social ties and a sense of belonging across the neighbourhood.
A Linear Park Connecting Communities
A central linear park runs through the area, linking different neighbourhoods and functions through a sequence of distinct landscape typologies. Along this spine, key destinations such as Havepladsen, Idrætshaverne, and Baghaven support a wide range of activities — from sports and community programmes to relaxation and everyday gathering.
The project integrates new social functions within the green structure, including spaces for associations, community facilities, and local initiatives. By concentrating activities along the park, the design encourages interaction and helps bridge cultural and social divides between different resident groups.
The new landscape connects the neighbourhood to the larger green network of Roskilde, linking it to Hyrdehøj Forest and surrounding recreational routes. By opening up the area and improving accessibility, the project invites both residents and visitors to move through and engage with the district.
