Transforming Malminkartanonhuippu
Tranquillity in nature, diverse opportunities for physical activity, and unique outdoor experiences.
Over the next few years, the City of Helsinki will implement the long-awaited improvements to Malminkartanonhuippu, or Malminkartano Hill.
The area includes a landfill hill constructed between the 1970s and 1990s, which has gradually developed into a vibrant local and regional destination for recreation. The city’s overall ambition is to create a new destination for the city, and to create an attraction of both regional and national scale.
The city’s overall ambition is to create a new destination with the potential to attract visitors from across Finland.
Based on the city’s detailed local plan adopted in 2023, MASU Planning will help the city turn its vision into reality by transforming the landfill hill and its surrounding recreational areas into a diverse, attractive and high-quality destination for outdoor recreation and physical activity.
The existing landscape, natural values and ecological connections form the basis for the transformation. By strengthening these inherent qualities, the project seeks to enhance and develop the area’s ecological diversity and value for future generations.
Renewing facilities for recreation and physical activity
The area’s recreational and activity facilities will be renewed with parkour and obstacle courses, a fully equipped outdoor fitness area, and adventure-oriented activity zones designed especially to encourage children to be physically active. These will be complemented by what is envisioned as Helsinki’s finest water play area.
To support a wide range of recreational activities, barbecue and relaxation areas, a stargazing spot, and a second set of fitness stairs are planned for visually striking and attractive locations throughout the area.
Furthermore, experiential lighting will be designed to preserve the darkness of the hilltop and maintain opportunities for observing the night sky despite the urban surroundings.
To improve visitor services, the entrance area will be transformed into a modern, welcoming and distinctive activity hub with toilet facilities.
Planning has begun in autumn 2026, with construction planned to start in the following years.
