11 Dec 2024 Say hi to Thorbjørn and Chia-Yu
Please, help us to give a warm welcome to Thorbjørn Klitgaard as our new landscape Architect MAA, and Chia-Yu Chang as a new intern.
Thorbjørn graduated from the Aarhus School of Architecture in 2020 with an MA in architecture. He joins our Copenhagen team as a landscape architect with work experience from Skaarup Landskab, Erik Arkitekter, RUM, and 1:1 Landskab.
“In my previous positions I have covered a wide range of scales from private gardens and courtyards to master plans. I have developed outdoor areas for several care homes, a pharmaceutical company, a hotel and a jail to name a few examples,” Thorbjørn says.
Since his graduation he has primarily worked within the field of landscape architecture.
“I believe landscape architecture plays an important role in addressing the issue of global loss of biodiversity and the destruction of habitats for animals and plants. We must tread a fine line between developing the best habitats for people and leaving nature to flourish at its own terms,” explains Thorbjørn.
“I’m happy to join MASU Planning because of their distinctive way of combining pavements and greenery, and because of the attention to details that is an inherent part of their work, which is something I appreciate. I have previously been the only landscape architect in a studio and found, that collaborating with colleagues in the same field leads to better projects.”
Initially Thorbjørn has been responsible for a DGNB-survey, has taken part in one of our competitions and will become an integral part of our on-going projects.
In his spare time Thorbjørn is highly active and is arguably the fittest member of our team.
“My favourite sport is triathlon, and with three disciplines to train for and races in the summer months it is quite a time-consuming hobby. Besides sports I enjoy brewing beer in the kitchen and making hand-made bars of soap.”
Chia-Yu Chang joins our HQ in Copenhagen as intern. She has bachelor’s degree is Urban and Rural Planning from Nanjing University, China, and is currently pursuing her master’s degree of Food and Landscape at SLU, Sweden.
“For me, landscape architecture is about much more than designing outdoor spaces — it is about creating environments that are functional, enjoyable, and meaningful for people, species, and the broader ecosystem. It is about blending nature and human needs in ways that promote sustainability, inclusivity, and resilience,” Chia-Yu says. “My background in urban planning makes me more familiar with the bigger scale, and I found myself eager to work at multiple scales. I chose to learn more about landscape as it bridges the gap between large-scale visions and smaller-scale, site-specific designs, and it fulfils my desire to leave a beneficial and long-lasting good mark on people’s everyday life.”
Reflection further on the added value that landscape architecture delivers, she explains, “What makes landscape architecture unique is its ability to dynamically address some of the biggest challenges we face today, from urbanization and climate change to mental health and biodiversity loss. By rethinking how we use and shape our spaces, landscape architecture helps us connect with nature, improve well-being, and build a more sustainable future.
She is looking forward to joining the MASU Planning team for the next 6 months.
“I have been following MASU Planning’s work since I came to Sweden, and I have visited H.C. Andersen’s House and Garden, which is one of their projects that inspired me deeply. I am fascinated by MASU’s holistic and thoughtful design approach, and they are blending cultural values, natural system, and sustainability in their projects. After interning at larger companies in the past, I am excited about the opportunity to work at a smaller, dynamic studio where I can be more engaged in projects and collaborate closely with a talented team. I believe this experience will allow me to learn and grow as a landscape urban designer.”
In her spare time Chia-Yu likes to go hiking, play badminton, watch movies, and spend time with family and friends.
