Inauguration of a New Municipal Park in Batumi

Last week, Malin Blomqvist and Tina Vinther Poulsen participated in the inauguration of a new municipal park in Batumi, Georgia.

MASU Planning’s landscape design results in a park that aims to create a joyful and lush landscape for both residents and visitors. Seamlessly integrated into the city’s overall infrastructure, it also extends the famous Batumi Boulevard, offers a diverse range of recreational opportunities, sports facilities and new pedestrian and bicycle paths.

“Our design for the park is based on a deep respect for the city’s natural landscape and cultural heritage. This is our overall design philosophy and it can be seen throughout the project – one example is how the project plays with only local stone in the water features, planting beds and paving. The park’s topography reflects the natural landscape of Batumi, and we believe the sum of these little features emphasises identity and gives back to the city of Batumi as a whole. We’ve created a park that acknowledges the site’s unique character and identity while slightly pushing the boundaries by introducing innovative landscape architectural solutions grounded in Nordic design traditions,” says Malin Blomqvist.

“We managed to preserve almost all of the existing trees and plants in the area, and ultimately, they have guided the overall park design. These were supplemented with carefully selected trees locally grown in the Batumi region and abroad, and with this we have both increased biodiversity and created a park with atmosphere and ambience. What thrills us most is that residents of all ages already seem to have accepted the park as theirs, and we look forward to seeing how it evolves,” adds Tina Vinther Poulsen.

The park is an integral part of Silk Towers – a mixed-use project that includes apartments, a premium-class hotel, event spaces, commercial zones, cafés and restaurants, a yacht club, and sports and wellness facilities. Silk Development is the developer for both the Municipal Park and Silk Towers.

The Towers are designed by Kengo Kuma and Associates, a renowned architectural practice with whom MASU Planning has previously collaborated on several projects, including H.C. Andersen’s House and Garden.
